Opposing Forces in Art and Design

Photography   by Eric Fritz Add comments

Visually combining opposing forces or ideas is a common artistic technique. I can’t help but to think of the Modest Mouse cd cover design where you first see the hot air balloon, then you see the passenger ‘basket’ that’s actually an anchor. It reflects well the title “We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank”. Along the same lines, the following photos shown at boredstop show mastery of this concept, demonstrating that opposites still share commonalities. It’s worth noting that poet Eli Siegel, who founded the philosophy Aesthetic Realism, said “‘all beauty is the making one of the permanent opposites in reality”.
